Last week I registered my last born child for Kindergarten. All. Day. Kindergarten.
I have waited for this day for 5 years. The first day of school is July 26, 2010.
I have been a stay at home mom for 14 years. I've worked a few odd jobs on the side over that time, but all self-employment type stuff. No one has given me a real or consistent paycheck in 14 years.
I also haven't been in school for almost 17 years. Except for 1 class I took in 1998 at a local community college in San Jose. It was a black and white photography class. This was before the mainstream public went digital. I still have very fond memories of my time during that 4 months in the darkroom creating art. Or at least, trying to create art. I started a second class after that first one, but dropped out a couple weeks into it because we decided to move 30 miles away. Definitely too far to commute for a photo night class.
In 2002, Eric went back to school to get his MBA. For 3 1/2 years I supported him in that venture, including being at times what felt like a single parent, or at other times editing his papers and proofreading projects. It was like being in school, but not really getting anything out of it. When he graduated, he said to me something like, "Ok, now it's your turn. I have what I want. When you are ready to go back to school, just let me know."
After enduring his return to school while keeping a full time job, I didn't want to think about textbooks or term papers ever again. I've never regretted my decision not to pursue a degree higher than my AA. Other demands on my time were more pressing, and I hadn't really decided what I wanted to "do" anyway. I did not want to waste time going to school for a major that I wasn't passionate about.
Now that Brayden starting Kindergarten is so close and finally tangible, I am really kinda freaking out. What on earth am I going to do with myself while the kids are at school?
I do have some goals. I have projects that have been on the back burner for years that I want to accomplish. I could step up my volunteer time at the school now that I won't need a babysitter for every time I go over there.
I could get a job. Not that I don't want to have a job, but I don't want to get a job, just to have one. I'm confident that made no sense at all. I don't want to be a slave to someone else's schedule just because I feel like I need to get a job. And if I am going to work, I want to pick a place that I love. And I haven't really come up with any great ideas. And even if I had a great place in mind, I'm sure they wouldn't hire me right now because of the bad economy.
I also could go back to school. I've actually thought a lot about that possibility. But what would I major in? And then would I actually use said degree when I was done? Two careers that interest me are Photography and Interior Design... but I don't really see myself as going full board professional in either of those things later on. I don't want to become a career wife/mom just because my kids are in school. I still want to be available to volunteer at the school, or watch track meets, or go to band concerts.
I guess I am going through a mid-life crisis of sorts. I feel like there is a big change coming my way and I don't really know what to do with it. I don't want to spend my first year of freedom wasting away on the couch watching Oprah and eating bon-bons. (Oh wait, I hate Oprah....) I feel like I need to have some kind of plan or I will waste the time. And I don't like the idea of sitting around wasting time. I feel like I need to be "doing" something... even if it is small.
So, don't be surprised if you see lots of blogs coming from my corner of the Internet trying to come up with some ideas... brainstorming posts... if you will. Any and all feedback will be appreciated. And if you have any great ideas about what I can do with my new "grown-up life", please let me know. I'm open to almost anything at this point... well except belly dancing or professional fundraising. I do have my limits, you know.

love that (oh wait...I hate Oprah) hahahaha ok seriously.....we all have to cross this bridge one day. What will we actually do with our lives when we feel we actually have one? My small advice is take your time figuring it out and in the meantime of figuring it out, actually "do" those projects you've always been meaning to do. If you don't do them in this next year and you open a can of worms...good worms, but still, open up something new, those projects will continue going undone...anything creative that you want to do in your lifetime, do it now! Write a book...take a lesson of some sort, learn something new by taking a class, ect...
I am anticipating this day to come for me, and my baby is only two! But I know I will feel the same way as you, exactly. I don't like to waste time sitting around either, but still want to be there for my kids. It's a real dilemma. Looks like you've got a lot of soul searching and praying to do. Good luck, and I'm sure that you will find your answer.
I will be in this same boat next year..all 3 girls will be on the SAME school schedule..only for 1 year, but non-the-less it will be the same! I have keept my RDA license active even though I have not worked in over 4 years, not with the thought that I will go back to work, but because I NEVER want to take those state boards again! I have been watching the boys for the last 2 years and im counting down the days till im done. If Nic moves forward with this new job, im done come the end of summer, if he does not, im still done when the girls start back up to school in the end of August. Im taking advantage of this year with everyone on the same schedule. I have missed helping in the girls classes over the last two years, I have put that on the back burner and cant wait to get back in the school to see what is really going on. I will admit there will be some days boring days of "what will I do now" but im looking forward to that. I can't get a job, I know that sounds strange, but once next year is over, it will be back to 2 different school scheduls and I can't ask someone to try and attempt that schedule, it would not be worth it.
I think for you, you love photography so much, you really need to pursue that more. You take great pictures and should just start getting the word out. You could stay as busy as you want, it would get you out of the house doing something that you love and it would bring in some exrtra cash.
Good luck to you! I wish we lived closer, we could meet for starbucks and be lazy houswives toghether! Ha! Ha!...I would LOVE to really be lazy!!
hey I just found your blog. :) I like this post I don't know if you knew but I have been doing photography for the past 7 years. I know a lot about cameras. I am not sure if you already know a lot about them. You have a really nice camera. If you ever want to go spend a day I can show you some things if you don't already know them.
Somehow, I don't think you wasting time or sitting in your jammies in front of tv is really going to happen -- and I don't even know you! Just not seeing it! I agree with Lexie -- take your time and take at least the first year to dive into projects you normally don't have time for. I switched jobs many years ago and started as an 11 month employee. I hadn't had more than a week off since I started working at 13, so I was pretty excited! I planned some projects but also really enjoyed not having to rush from one thing to the other. And I made time to got lunch with friends, etc. I accomplished a lot but also made time to sit outside and read in the sunshine. During that year you will of course still be busy with kid stuff, but also have time to explore other things that interest you that might lead to a job or other project. I'm excited for you about this change that's coming! Embrace it! I can't wait to read more about your thoughts as the time approaches, too.

Hey, I am just now getting around to reading other blogs :) I loved reading this. I love my phase of life, so I am not sure I have any ideas for you. I waited and waited to return to school because I never felt finished. So I am in school and I LOVE it. but I understand where you are coming from. I do have a mental list of things I want to do after I graduate next year. I love working in the local food pantry, really expanded my world. Working at the school is good, but I am with you, with church callings, I just don't see me doing the PTA thing ever. LOL.....I just picked up a card from the hospital last week, the American Cancer Society needs people to take patients to their dr.s appointments. I plan on doing that soon. I have a list of projects as well, but those are the only things I can think of. I'd love to see you take photography and have fun with that. Godo luck!
Make a list of what are your favorite things to do.Not with Eric, not with the kids, just you. List everything. Even if it's out in left field. Everything you've always wanted to do before real life. You might be surprised what comes out on paper. Good luck!
