Second Christmas

My parents arrived for a "late christmas" on the 28th after spending Christmas with my dad's family in Seattle. I'm jealous - they actually got a white christmas! The snow didn't stick, but it still snowed! This is my mom with Megan and Ian - she LOVES her hugs!!!! We've crammed a lot of fun into 3 days! Saturday night, the 4 adults went out to a dinner theater and saw "Anything Goes". The men planned this which blew me away because this is NOT Eric's kind of thing, but he knew I would love it and he actually enjoyed himself. We had a FABULOUS buffet dinner, dessert and even good seats near the front! This was our anniversary "date" and we had fun celebrating with my parents who also hit their 35th year this week too! Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!
Sunday, we took them to the temple to see the lights - they were really impressed. I think my mom's favorite part was the room inside with the nativities from all over the world. The display from France was incredible!

I shouldn't be blogging right now - I still have suitcases to pack, food to prepare, and bedrooms to clean, but just wanted to wish you all a happy new year! We are leaving in the morning for the "Happiest Place on Earth" and I'm so excited!!!! I also can't wait to see the looks on my kids faces when we "accidentally" bump into their cousins in the hotel lobby! There are 18 Wanlass's converging on the city of Anaheim tomorrow - so watch out Orange County!!!

Happy Anniversary!

Today is our 15th Anniversary! Can you believe it??? Sometimes I don't know where the time has gone! We were married on Decmeber 30, 1992 in the Oakland Temple - our favorite temple in the whole wide world!

15 random things about Eric that I wanted to share:

  1. He's a wonderful father - he loves babies and loves taking care of them - if I had wanted 8 kids (which I never have), he would have said, "Bring it on!"

  2. He's a handyman, which has saved us a lot of $$ going to repair guys

  3. He does a really good job of keeping in touch with all his siblings (all six of them) and checking in with his parents on a regular basis.

  4. He stubborn - but always stubborn for the right causes

  5. He knows how to work hard

  6. He loves spending time playing with the boys and wishes Megan would let him fix her hair every once in a while

  7. He' a fashion dude (guy version of diva) - he never hesitates to tell any of us if we are walking out the door wearing a "fashion faux-pas", and he's always dressed nicer than I am... I'm the queen of grunge....

  8. He's a perfectionist - sometimes this is good and sometimes it's bad..... :) (in my opinion... he never sees a problem with perfectionism.....)

  9. He LOVES super scary roller coasters

  10. He served his mission in Madrid, Spain.

  11. He always comes up with funny "one liners"

  12. He insists on making sure that we are financially stable enough for me to stay home with the kids

  13. He took me ice skating in Sacramento for our first date

  14. He's a die hard sports fans - his favorite teams are BYU, 49ers, SF Giants, and sometimes the Golden State Warriors... when they aren't in the mix, we do cheer for AZ teams, though!

15. He loves me still after all these years and has patiently put up with all my "weirdness"!

Happy Anniversary Sweetie! Can't wait for the next 15... and the next 15.... and the next 15.....

Random Acts of Cuteness

Look at that behind.... right when I went to get the camera, he ran down the hallway and his diaper fell to the ground around his ankles... everybody (but me) saw it and was laughing like crazy! He got to the end of the hall, and pulled his diaper back up, but obviously he didn't pull it up far enough....
Megan wearing lots of lip gloss... and looking VERY grown up!

Brayden sleeping the day away.....

Ian taking a self portrait.... when I saw this picture I laughed so hard... his hair is flattened from wearing a Santa hat all day and I think the look on his face reminds me of Jim from the Office....

Ian and Brayden watching TV in my room using my computer chair (which doesn't belong in my room - they are so close to the screen that Ian is resting his feet on the TV cabinet!

Pre-Christmas stress - At first I thought maybe he was praying, but Eric fell asleep at the computer trying to get itunes set up for Taylor's new ipod.... look at all that mess on the desk - no matter how many times I clean it, it always looks that bad.

Taylor showing off his new ipod....

Brayden with a "grape julius" mustache... yum!?!

We watched Evan Almighty the other night and at the end they all do this funny dance - when Brayden (and the other kids) heard it they all started dancing - it was so cute!

Christmas Day

Merry Christmas! We had a very relaxed Christmas morning since we had no family in town and no where to go. I loved it! We have a strict policy of not letting the kids get us out of bed before 7 am and amazingly they follow it! :) (I can remember 2 years in the recent past that we've been up til 3 am assembling something big, so on those nights, 7 am is still way too early!) This year I was awake 10 minutes before 2 of the kids - that doesn't happen very often. We started a new tradition this year on Christmas morning and I think we are going to "keep" this one too - a gal in RS talked about how her family would gather on her parents bed on Christmas morning and read the account in the scriptures of Christ's birth from Luke 2 and then have a family prayer before heading out to the tree (and ensuing craziness!) We tried that this year and loved it! It really helped keep calmness in the house while we were tearing through the presents. We also tried something else new this year - we all drew names and had to make a "homemade" present for that person without spending more than $10. It was challenging, but we all enjoyed it. Eric did his, plus helped 2 kids and I did mine, plus helped 2 kids. Everyone really liked the presents that we made for each other and we were all proud of the creative ideas we came up with!

For the out of town family, here's a recap of how it went for each one:

Taylor got accessories for his new ipod (this came a week before christmas due to an old mp3 player breaking - yes, we paid $25 for the extended warranty and was very glad we did, since they mailed us a refund check for the full purchase price that we could use for anything else we wanted ) He also got an xbox game, the guiness book of world records, DVD - Shrek the Third, and his partner present was a BYU themed corkboard for his room (made by mom, your's truly).

Megan's partner (Taylor) made her a lapdesk that was personalized with her name and pictures, she also got a snowglobe, new bike helmet, fairy books and an xbox game (Viva Pinata). The thing she seemed most excited about was the movie in her stocking - Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix. She is a HUGE Harry Potter fan. She became really obsessed with the snow globe after watching The Santa Clause 3. Now she plans to start a snow globe collection!

Brayden was so fun to watch this year. He's been trying to open up random gifts under the tree for weeks and gets really mad when someone tells him "no". Finally now he could open them and he loved it! But in reality, one gift would have been enough.... once he had one toy to play with, we had to coax him over to open up the rest of his gifts. Isn't that how it always works? His partner was Ian, who wanted to make him a wood car to play with. Eric and I had the idea to buy pinewood derby cars, cut them and paint them. It would be easy and cheap! Ian helped Dad sand and paint the car. He loves doing projects and working with tools, just like his dad! Brayden LOVED it! He also loved his disney story book, the mickey mouse clubhouse car, and the spiderman 3 wheel scooter! It was so fun to watch how excited he got with each box!

Ian loves everything about christmas. He loves giving as much as he loves receiving! He got a fun pinewood derby car from his dad, since he made one for Brayden, he decided he really wanted one for himself. Eric made a second one for him on the sly... he had no idea he was going to get one too! He also got Star Wars Lego game for xbox, a Ripley's Believe it or Not Book, Surf's Up DVD and a cool remote control car. His favorite thing was the spiderman web-blaster dart gun thingy...

Our big gift for the kids on Christmas morning was Rock Band for the xbox. This really was a cool family gift - all six of us have had lots of fun playing it! No one has mastered the vocals yet, but we all have fun with the drums and the guitar. If you think being a drummer is easy, think again! It's soooo HARD! Taylor seems to be the best at both guitar and drums.... figures... at least all those years on the trumpet are paying off! Maybe he'll decide to spend some more time learning how to play the real guitar we got him last year for Christmas. It's collected a lot of dust over the last year!

We didn't open any gifts from the extended family yet. My parents are coming into town Friday night, so we are saving them until then - then we get Christmas #2! Eric and I also have a big suprise for the kids that we will unveil Friday night - I'm so excited I can hardly wait!!!!

Favorite Christmas Recipes

One of the plusses to not having family close by is LOTS of free time on Holidays to blog... Yes, I should have posted these a week ago, but oh well - you don't have to wait until next Christmas to try these out - you'll love them!

For dinner on Christmas Eve, I made:

Chicken Cordon Bleu (this is not a low cal meal, but oh, so worth it every once in a while!)
2 large chicken breasts
2-4 slices of swiss cheese
2-4 slices of deli ham
1 c. milk
1 c. bread crumbs (I make mine by crushing croutons)
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 c. heavy whipping cream
Pound chicken into thin "sheets". You can divide it up into 4 smaller portions, or keep it as 2 large portions. After chicken has been pounded out, sprinkle with pepper and garlic salt to taste and lay out a piece of cheese and ham. Roll up as best you can and secure with toothpicks. Dip chicken in milk, then bread crumbs and fry in oil. Cook in oil on all sides just long enough to cook the outsides of all parts of the chicken. Place in a baking dish. In separate bowl, mix soup and whipping cream. Pour over the top of chicken in the dish and bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Serve over hot white rice! Delish!

For Breakfast this morning we had:

Butterballs (This is our all time family favorite recipe for Breakfast!)
18-20 frozen rhodes dinner rolls
1/2 3 oz. box of Cook and Serve Butterscotch Pudding (no instant)
1 stick margarine (no butter and no low fat stuff)
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1 t. cinnamon
The night before you plan to eat these (about 10 p.m.), spray a bundt or coffee cake pan with Pam. Put frozen rolls in bottom of pan. Sprinkle dry pudding powder evenly over the rolls. Melt margarine and mix brown sugar into the margarine. Pour evenly over the rolls. Sprinkle cinnamon over everything. Cover with saran wrap and let sit out on the counter over night. In the morning bake at 350 for 30 minutes. (I bake at 325 for 25 minutes because my oven is hotter than normal.) Flip over onto a plate and serve warm.

Saturday Morning Stir Fry
4-6 red potatoes (pre cooked and refridgerated overnight)
4-6 eggs
1/2 package of bacon, cut into 1" strips
1/2 onion, chopped
In a large pan (wok if you have one), cook bacon until it's about half way done. Add onion, and saute for a couple minutes more. Cut potatoes into bite size chunks and add to the pan. When the bacon is just about finished, mix eggs together in a separate bowl with a little milk. Add to the pan and stir and cook until eggs are done. I like to season it all with some garlic and salt.
If you want to cut some calories, strain out the bacon grease before adding the rest of the ingredients. You can also cheat and use frozen hash browns in place of the potatoes, but it's not as good that way! :)

New Christmas Eve Tradition

No, this isn't my house.....

We don't really have any cemented Christmas Traditions for our family yet - sounds weird I know, after 15 years of marriage, but all the years we lived close to the extended family was spent trying to cram in as many "family gatherings" as humanly possible in 48 hours time. So, this is our 3rd Christmas "on our own" and it's been fun to try out different things to see what everyone really enjoys.

For months, Ian has been begging us to go for a bike ride through the neighborhood on Christmas Eve to look at all the neighborhood lights. We all had a really fun time, so I think this activity is "a keeper"!

More pictures of Christmas Day to come tomorrow - tonight we have the monumental task of sorting through all the stuff, putting things away and getting rid of all the garbage!!!

Christmas Eve Fog

No, it's not foggy in the weather sense...

Saturday was a crazy busy day... so many things we were trying to get done since we couldn't go out shopping on Sunday, and didn't want to have to go out to the stores today.

Our Sunday Christmas Program at church was WONDERFUL. I truly came home from church with all my make up cried off and felt the spirit so strongly. I really needed it.

Then on Sunday, while making dinner, I developed this weird headache... for anyone who gets motionsick, you will know what I'm talking about - it felt like that weird headache you get right when you know you are starting to get car sick... it was weird because I was home and not doing anything unusual. So, about 9:30, I decided to take two Meclizine. It's an anti nausea pill that works really well to prevent motion sickness and it really helps with all things in this area. I normally take one pill as a preventative when I know I'm going to need it, but the bottle says you can take one or two, so I decided to take two in hopes that I would be able to get a really good night's sleep and wake up headache free. Well, for whatever reason it took me until well after midnight to get to sleep, but boy I really slept. Eric couldn't drag me out of bed today for anything. I finally drug(no pun intended) myself out of bed about 9:00 ish, and took a shower hoping that would help. It didn't help too much - so I went downstairs and tried to eat some breakfast, but really all I wanted to do was go back to bed. If it had been any other day of the year besides Christmas Eve, I probably would have just gone back to bed. But, Eric had 2-3 errands to run and so did I, so we set out to get everything done. After 2 diet cokes, I was more awake, but all day, I felt like I had a medicine overhang. It didn't really wear off until after dinner tonight. The great part about it, was that it totally relaxed me and when I would normally be stressed to the max on Christmas Eve, today, I just didn't care at all!

The Best Made Plans....

Yesterday was interesting... I spent most of my day running errands in the morning and then cleaning the downstairs in the afternoon. The YM were coming over to have a pizza/planning meeting, so things needed to be picked up more than normal. (Not that the YM care at all, but there were many adults showing up too.) The YW were offering 2 hours of free babysitting so you could drop off the kids at the church and go do last minute shopping, gift wrapping, errands, whatever. So I had this brilliant idea! I'd spend my day cleaning house for the YM, then drop off the other three at the church to play with their friends and I could spend an hour (or two) doing whatever I wanted. So, all day I fantasized about what I was going to do with my "free" time.... in the end, I finally settled on getting a Caramel Apple Cider at Starbucks and going to get a pedicure... something I only indulge myself in a couple times a year. I brought along a Christmas novel that I was really close to finishing and thought to myself, "you are a genious... this is going to be great... just the type of relaxing night you need!"

So, I went to Starbucks (mine has a drive up window) and wonderful - not a long line like usual! I'm thinking this is great! I get in line only to find out when I get to the order window that they are out of apple juice - so no caramel apple cider. Darn, I was disapointed! I could have gotten a vanilla bean, but they suggested a white peppermint hot chocolate as a replacement, and that sounded really good and christmas-sy. After all, it was hot chocolate, right? So, I pay for my drink and pull away and as I'm driving over to the nail place, I'm thinking, "man, my car really smells like coffee." So I sniff my drink.... and it definately smells like coffee... but I'm thinking I know they told me it was hot chocolate.... so I pull into the nail parking lot and the windows are all dark. It's 7:30 and they closed down at 7:00. I guess the holiday extended hours don't apply to nail places.... so I decide to find out once and for all what's in my drink - I take a small sip and ugh!!! it's definately coffee... well masked by other stuff, but definately coffee. I got out of my car and tossed the drink in the garbage! So no caramel apple cider, no pedicure and no where to sit and read my book - so what did I do? I headed to Sam's Club to get my shopping finished... I think Eric was happy that I got my shopping done, even though I was really looking forward to that pedicure!

Megan's Turn to Shine

So Tuesday night felt oddly deja-vu-ish... only Eric was around to help out with the madness this time. Taylor had a sports banquet at the Jr. High at 5:15 and Megan had a band concert at 6:00, then a choir concert at 7:00 (same location). Eric and Taylor went to the sports dinner, and the rest of us headed over to the school. Megan's concert was rediculously short - the 5th graders played like 3 songs plus the warm up, but each song it literaly 8 measures long! And not a single one was "holiday-ish"... I was telling Megan's piano teacher about it and she wondered if the band teacher is maybe a J.W., since there were Christmas songs in her book and the teacher told them to skip over them! Am I the only person that finds that weird? Anyway, we had a bunch of time to kill in between concerts, which translates into LOTS of frustration with Brayden, but Eric arrived just in time to deal with him during the choir concert, so I could actually sit, listen and take pictures and video. The choir concert was cute - they did a hannakuh song, and a reindeer rap. Sorry I can't post the videos - the file size ended up being too big!
This is like a "Where's Waldo" picture - can you see Megan in the crowd???
Hint - she's wearing a black shirt!

Hold the Phone....

Yes, I'm dressed and ready to go to the gym, but I was doing a quick "blog surf" and stumbled across some WONDERFUL news! The awesome book Twilight is finally being cast and the results are in for Edward and Bella..... drumrolll... those of you who are big fans - I know the anticipation is more than you can bear!

For Bella: Kristen Stewart. I'd thought I'd never seen her in a movie before until I looked her up on imdb.com. I have seen Zathura and snatches of Catch that Kid. Don't really have an opinion of her as an actress, but I think she has the right look - Bella always describes herself in grunge clothes, ponytails and she thinks she is rather plain. I think this means Bella has that simple beauty - you know the kind of people that can get away with no make up. Almost every picture of this girl I found online, she was wearing next to no make up, which I thought was really interesting. I really like this picture of Kristen I found online - I think it's got Bella written all over it!

Now... for the big one.... HOW can you cast Edward and do him any kind of justice??? In August our Book Club got together to talk about Twilight (and New Moon and Eclipse). We usually have 4-8 ladies on any given night show up for Book Club. On "Twilight" night we had 19! Yes, you heard right, it was a world record (for us) and I felt it deserved a place in the Guiness Book of World Records... okay, not really, but I was thrilled! Book Club is kinda my pet project, so I take our attendance numbers personally! Anyway, we broke into 2 groups - the group who had read all three books and the group that had read only the first. We talked a lot about who on earth you could cast as Edward without ruining the whole thing! This is a very difficult task and I've had heated debates with friends over who could pull off Edward. We'll here's the decision and, yes, I'm thrilled: Robert Pattinson! I didn't recognize the name at first, but he played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies - YESSS! He's perfect - look at that angular chin - I see vampire written all over this kid! He can act, which is essential, and he's NOT Hayden Christensen... I know a lot of ladies who were voting for him, but after the Stars Wars movie flops, I don't think I could go to this movie if he had gotten the part. Sorry Hayden, George Lucus ruined your career, in my humble opinion! Ironically enough, in all the "who can play Edward" discussions I've had, this guy never came up on the list! Now I can eagerly await the movie for Twilight and the publication of the 4th book sometime next year! Good things come to those who wait, right? For more information on the Twilight Phenonmenon go to:
Okay - I'm off to the gym, yes, I'm still going even though this set me back a bit today! Then I get to come home and clean house for the YM to come over tonight and destroy it all over again! I will post pictures of Megan's concert from last night later today..... stay tuned.....

Memoirs of a Wanlass

Today is Eric’s 38th Birthday!

I wanted to salute all the good memories that we love to relive of the Wanlass Growing Up Years whenever we have a family get together. I’ve emailed, called and nagged all six of Eric’s siblings and his mom and got the following stories from them. I was amazed at how many of them I’d never heard before. There were many incidents that we discussed that I chose to omit – like the time when Eric and Jeff got in a fight over a basketball game and Eric ended up getting a tooth knocked out, or the time when Eric and Brian had a brawl at their Aunt Jolene’s House while they were in town for their Grandpa’s funeral…. Anyway, Happy Birthday Eric!

We love you!

The Wanlass Family in July 2006

Bottom (left to right) Elise, Larry, Linda, Rebecca

From Linda a.k.a. MOM (mother of seven, grandmother of 15, and still going strong!)
When Eric and Jeff were about two and four I took a shower. Not a good idea. When I came out Jeff and Eric had the lid to the flour container, spoons, hands, whatever was handy and were throwing flour all over the floor, on themselves, and up in the air. They were having a great time. I, on the other hand, was not having such a great time. Now that I don't have to clean it up, I have to admit that it really did look like fun.

Another Jeff and Eric toddler incident was when I was writing letters in the front room, the good daughter and daughter-in-law that I am, Dad was at a meeting. Jeff and Eric were in the kitchen. I was so absorbed in getting the letters written that it took me a while to figure out the boys were way too quiet. When I went into the kitchen to find out what they were doing, I found them covered with food coloring. They had been squirting each other with food coloring. I had to give them another bath. Even with that the food coloring didn't come completely off. They were very colorful boys!

When they were in that age range they also turned on the faucet for the water heater and it was shooting all over. Another time they poured vinegar on the fresh peaches I was going to can. Needless to say, I never canned those peaches. Jeff said Eric was the master-mind of there mischief and then he got into trouble because he was the oldest. I don't know who the master-mind was, but I'm really sure they both got into trouble.

When Elise was a baby I was Relief Society secretary. Relief Society was on Wednesdays then. Eric was well old enough to dress himself, but he didn't want to. On this Wednesday I told him to get dressed or we were going to be late. He just wouldn't. He was stubborn and so was I. I was not going to let a 2 1/2 year old out stubborn me, so I wouldn't dress him. I decided to teach him a lesson. I got the other kids in the car, locked the door and left him standing in the kitchen drawer in his pajamas. I drove to the church, gave the books to someone to take notes, put Jeff in the nursery, gave Elise to Suzanne to hold and went back home. I was sure Eric would be in tears and very ready to dress himself. Guess what? He was still standing in the drawer in his pajamas. Not a tear in his eyes. Guess who won that battle?

When Elise was a baby she had fussy time when I was cooking dinner. I would lay her on a blanket by the sliding door so she could look outside, but sometimes she just cried. One day she was crying and Eric came along and decided she would happy if she was sitting up. The only problem was, she was too little to sit up. Eric's heart was in the right place!

When Jeff was freshman in high school he had his appendix out. When he was feeling some better, Eric came home from Middle School and had a terrible stomach ache. He laid on the couch and moaned in pain. Being the up-tight mother that I am, I told him to lay down and it would get better. That was not a good enough response for him, so he proceeded to tell me that I didn't care about him because he had appendicitis and he would die. Obviously, he didn't. They had been doing sit-ups in P.E. and he was stiff. In Eric's defense, I took one of the Garcia boys to Kaiser in Vallejo with appendicitis and he was stiff from P.E. too!

When Eric was in high school he loved to argue about anything. We said he should be a lawyer so he could get paid for arguing. One time he was arguing with me over some dumb thing, so I decided to see if he really wanted what he was asking for or he just wanted to argue. I took his side of the debate and guess what? He took my side. When I mentioned to him what he had just said, he looked really sheepish. From then on, we didn't argue. He stated his side of it and I stated mine and if it couldn't be resolved with compromise, I just told him I was the Mom and what I said was it and I wouldn't argue.

From Jeff (2 years older than Eric): Unfortunately I do not remember all the details. But when Eric was in junior high or high school he had scar tissue on his knee and which created a big bump on his knee, and I think may have cause him some pain. So the doctor has him wear a removable brace that covered his whole leg. Most people wore a brace of this type on the outside of their clothes but Eric insisted that he wear his underneath his clothes. And no matter how much he got teased by me and our friends he still insisted on wearing it underneath his clothes. I never did figure out why he wore it underneath his clothes.

That is the only story I could think of that did not involve in someone getting hurt…household full of boys lots of things got broken and someone almost always got hurt. I did think of a few of those as well.

Again I don’t remember how old we were, but it was before I was 16. Eric was taking a shower late in the day. It was before the addition to the house so the middle bath room had a window in the shower. So I and some friends thought it would be funny to bang on the window and scare Eric while he was in the shower. But the first few times did not get the reaction we wanted. So we kept knocking a little harder…until the window broke, sending glass into the shower. Eric had soap all over himself and now with glass all over the shower. As you might guess he cuts his foot. Further, the window faced the street. There was a large bush in front of the window, but I am sure not very comforting when you have no clothes on, soap all over, and your foot is bleeding all over. Don’t remember the outcome.

As you are aware Eric is extremely prone to sports injuries.

One time…I think one of the first times Eric played in basketball game after getting his first pair of recspecs. He was running down the court and I was running unto the court, during a game. Neither of us was looking, and the side of his face hit my shoulder. And of course in just the right place where his new sports glasses cut the side of his face. I think he needed stitches.

The next one was right after he returned home from his mission. It was the first time he played since he returned and we were playing at Mom and Dad’s. We had not been playing long when went up for a shot and came down wrong on his ankle. He sprained it pretty bad.

From Elise (2 years younger than Eric): For a long time I was the only girl with 5 brothers. They locked me in my room all the time because I was the only girl and the lock was on the outside of the door, which was stupid of them because all the toys were in my room. I kept q-tips in my dresser drawer so I could pop the door open and get out. Once they penny locked me in the room, so I couldn’t open the door at all and had to climb out the window into the backyard to escape.

One of the funniest things I ever remember happening to Eric was when we were at our first year at Ricks College. He lived in Green Briar, the complex behind mine (Cameo). He walked by our apartment to get to class every day. He had these shoes that he worshipped – they were alligator leather skinned loafers – he thought he was so cool wearing them! He was walking by our apt one morning in the dead of winter wearing these shoes. He totally slipped on the ice while we was waving to us! I was thinking he was a total idiot for wearing flat (leather bottomed) shoes in the snow and ice and ruining them, but he always had to dress “cool” so that’s just the way it was!

An annoying thing Eric used to do: he would send his roommates over to visit my apartment to “check up on me”. He told them to make it look like they were just wanting to hang out with us, but in reality, he wanted them to make sure I was dating RM’s – which of course, I wasn’t!

From Rebecca (10 years younger than Eric): I remember two stories about Eric. Both are about when he returned home from his mission. I remember when we picked him up from the airport and he was so old looking and he had a weird accent. When he came down the escalator and he had these big swords and was so amazed by them. When we all got home and he had castanets for me. I was so excited about them and he taught me how to play them. For many years it was my favorite present that I got from anyone and when I went to college I hung them up in my room and it was a big hit with all my roommates.

The other story was when he tried to cook Spanish food and I remember him so upset about are pans not working like they did in Spain and his soup that had a lot of meat in it and finding bones in it and he said that you were supposed to have bones in it. I remember watching him make the chicken nuggets and being awed that he was cooking and so excited about it. Happy Birthday Eric – LOVE YOU!

From Matt a.k.a. Pump (8 years younger than Eric) : I have a little story for Eric. I was little so I don’t remember much about the incident. I believe Eric was in High School because I wasn’t very old. Well I will start off with him hurting his leg. It was either his knee or his ankle. He was supposed to rest and not put any wait on his leg, so we wheeled the bed to the living room for him to watch T.V. as he laid there. I was messing around with him by telling him that I was going to pick my nose and put it in his mouth. He didn’t think I was going to do it, so I was very tempted to do it. I picked my nose while he wasn’t paying attention. When he wasn’t looking I put it in his mouth. He spit it out and told me the booger was salty, but I am sure he was joking. I am not sure if there was actually a booger on my finger, but I thought it was funny especially for being a kid. Till this day he denies it ever happened. Happy Birthday Eric!!!!! Love, Matt

From Brian (4 years younger than Eric): I’ve got 2 stories for you!!! We were going to Disneyland when I was about 6ish (give or take a year or two). We were in a BAD neighborhood in LA and stuck in terrible traffic. We were in the WV Bus and I HAD to GO… you know…GO GO… and it couldn’t wait!!! So mom and dad finally decided that Eric would have to hold an A&W soda pop can – he was the unlucky brother sitting next to me and he claims that I didn’t exactly aim very well! Talk about Brotherly Love! (Christy Here - Elise claims that Eric had to hold the pop can because it was his "punishment" for arguing so much with Brian in the car!)

“Big Eric” was the bully of the Nevada Street Gang. He was around Jeff and Eric’s age and he was a big fat kid. He was HUGE! He was bothering Jeff and Eric all the time, so they rigged up a booby trap on the side yard with a bucket of water. They called him into the back yard and as he walked through the side gate into the back yard, they dumped the huge bucket of water on his head. He ran home crying to his mom and dad and they came over and talked to our mom about Jeff and Eric’s behavior… whatever! Happy Birthday Eric!

From Jon (6 years younger than Eric) : Ceiling Snow Keeps Falling On My Head

When he was a much much younger man, Eric was obsessed (despite his 6 foot white frame) with trying to dunk a basketball. In fact he use to jump around the house to see how close he could come to hitting his head on the ceiling. Let's call it an aptitude (or is it altitude) test for the vertically challenged. As luck would have it, he got to the point where he could do it on a fairly regular basis. One day, he must have splashed some Jordan cologne on or ate some Wheaties (just two of many theories that may explain his mysterious half inch boost) because he hit his head so hard on the ceiling that he about knocked himself out. Consider Eric the "White Chocolate Thunder" of the Wide World of In-house Sports. Imagine a flurry of house dandruff streaming to the floor creating a pile of fresh powder as Eric holds his head in pain and disbelief. Ohh!....the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Eric experienced both at the same time that day. Quite a feat for a white (now even whiter) boy from the bucolic hoods of South Central Fairfield. Worried that he might have given himself a concussion, Eric's three younger brothers administered the only medical exams sanctioned by the Wanlass Adolescent Non-sanctioned (by Mom) League of American Sports or WANLAS for short. Despite his complaints that he didn't have enough time to study, he passed the first few tests with relatively flying colors (if you count pale white as a color). When asked where he was, he eagerly answered "At the church gym playing basketball!" Close enough, we thought; after all, the church is only a few blocks away. Then Brian asked him "how many fingers am I holding up?" Perhaps expecting fisticuffs or having flashes of tumbling Christmas trees dancing in his head, Eric flinched before slowly stating "SSSSICKS!" Although Brian had held up five fingers, we were once again unanimous that is was close enough. Undoubtedly, Eric's Kurt Rambis-esque REC-SPECS glasses were knocked of in his chaotic collision with the ceiling. The third and final question was a bit more tricky. When Matt asked "Who are you?", Eric was torn between Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. An existential crisis of the third kind for sure! Eric must have decided on the Birdman because because soon after, the slow footed southpaw was seen heaving awkward long range jumpers (emphasis mine) from the "money ball" spot on the Wanlass Adolescent Non-sanctioned (by Mom) League of American Sports (WANLAS) outdoor gymnasium on the lush grounds of the Wanlass family estate.

Now we all know that Eric doesn't seem to have experienced any lasting cranial impairment from his close encounter with unconsciousness, but (and this a fairly large but) what effect does hitting one's head on the good ole popcorn acoustic ceiling have on male pattern baldness!? Makes one wonder doesn't it? Hmmmm...maybe that is why Eric had me strap on a Darthvader mask and a radiation suit to help him scrape off the ceilings at the house in Dublin. He was trying to keep what few hairs he had from falling out! No more popcorn falling on the head equals no more follicle fallout. Acoustic foam is the anti-Rogaine. Who better to recruit for help in seeking revenge against the great white stuff from the north than a fellow balding bro? I smell a conspiracy. Didn't the grassy knoll have a dusting of fresh white powder at it's peak? Where is Kojak when we need him? Ohhh wait! Never mind!...All the Wanlass men are bald or balding, but only Eric made the leap into the great white beyond. So much for conspiracies!
Happy Birthday Eric! Hold your head up high, but not too high! We salute you, Mr. Vertically (and Follically) Challenged Aptitude Test Taker! You give new meaning to the sayings "Raising the roof" and "Bringing Down the House"! We salute you, leaping lord of the Wanlass castle! You've figured out a way to make it snow even during the summer. Its your birthday, so jump for joy...just do it outside!

Snowmen at Night

Thursday Night, Ian had a "Second Grade Performance" that we attended. Honestly, I didn't have a clue what it was or what they were doing. I just knew that Ian had one line to say and that they were doing something with music. It ended up being a really cute program about Snowmen and the fun things they do at night while we are all asleep. It's based on the book by Caralyn and Mark Buehner. This photo is of Ian saying his part - I know the quality is crappy, but I was in the very back row of the auditorium, so of course it's going to be bad! No normal flash would cover that distance! But it was a fun program and we enjoyed watching them sing (and dance) - they even did a little bit of a "rap" in their rendition of Jingle Bells! It was so cute to see all these 7 year old kids trying to rap! Ian kinda looks like a "gansta" in this picture, but it's just because they are wearing black paper hats like a real "snowman"... not that anyone here knows what that is!

After Ian's concert, we hurried over to Bogle for Taylor's band concert. It was well over an hour long and so HOT in the auditorium. I was able to keep Brayden entertained for the first 20-30 minutes, but I was dreaming if I thought I was going to keep him happy the whole time. Four different bands at the school performed, and Taylor's band was in the 3rd group. Not good for me... I ended up standing in the back of the room during his part with Brayden on my back and while the last group performed, we went outside so Brayden could run around and I could cool off a bit. His favorite song was "The Tempest" but my favorite was "Believe" from The Polar Express. They also did a Christmas music medley where the parents got to sing along. It was so nice to attend a school concert where they actually played "Christmas" music, not just Frosty the Snowman and other PC stuff. One group also played an African number (for Kwanzaa) and the Israeli National Anthem (for Hannakuh). All the music was really impressive! I tried to shoot some video, but by this time, Brayden was commanding my full attention and I didn't want him disrupting the entire concert!
After all this was over - I went home and CRASHED! I wanted to make it to our RS Ornament Exchange, but it was over by the time I could get there. DARN.... DARN.... DARN! Oh well, you can't win them all, can you? I can't wait for Tuesday, it's going to be a Repeat of Thursday, but at least Eric will not be out of town and can help out with Brayden so I can get a picture or two... stay tuned for Megan's day in the spotlight next week!

Brayden Talk

The last few days we have been working on teaching Brayden how to pray. He knows the drill, but has this funny thing he does when he's repeating the words after us - here is a sample of how tonight's dinner blessing went:

Eric: Dear Heavenly Father,
Brayden: Dee-a-a BOO!

E: We're thankful for this food.
B: Eeer a-a-a BOO!

E: We're thankful for our family.
B: Eeer a-a-a- BOO!

E: Please bless the food.
B: peees a-a-a BOO!

E: We say these things,
B: (wispering) we ay a BOO....

E: in the name of Jesus Christ,
B: (still wispering) in han BOO...

E: Amen.
B: A-BOO!

It takes all the will power in the world for the rest of the group at the table to not bust out laughing and maintain our composure.... we have no idea where he got the idea to say "BOO" at the end of each sentence, but we all love it. It's so darn cute!

Top Ten Reasons to Vote for Brother Romney

Disclaimer: I saw this online and thought it was hilarious... I still haven't decided who will get my vote, but this did have some unique spin....

10. We can do away with secret ballots and manifest our support of the candidate "by the usual sign." And we can get rid of costly recounts by simply saying, "opposed, if there be any."

9. In addition to dark suits, sunglasses, and earpieces, the Secret Service would be equipped with CTR rings.

8. The vice presidency would be replaced by first and second counselors.

7. At inaugural balls, dance parners would have to be separated from each other by at least the width of a Book of Mormon.

6. NASA could commission a satellite to "hie to Kolob."

5. The prayer closing each Cabinet meeting could include the phrase, "that we all can travel home or to our various destinations in safety."

4. The President not only could explain things in layman's terms, but in Lemuel's terms as well.

3. At his inauguration he would swear on the Bible "as far as it is translated correctly."

2. All foreign policy statements would begin with, "We believe."

1. The presidential limo would be a black Suburban with a vanity plate: "RULDS2?"

Christy here again - we parked in the Gilbert Super Walmart the other night and saw a license plate on an older model suburban that read, "8COWWMN". Even Megan and Ian thought it was great - Johnny Lingo is one of their favorite movies.....

Oh Foggy Night....

I love foggy nights in December and I think I've seen a grand total of 5 since I moved to the desert. Yesterday morning we woke up to fog and it was awesome! Of course, I grabbed the camera to document this extraordinary event. My love for December fog goes way back... when I was a kid we would have big Christmas Eve celebrations at my grandmas house. Food like you wouldn't believe, her special handmade ornaments were opened that night, and Santa always paid a special visit (even though it's his most busy night of the year)! Sometimes we went carolling to neighbors and sometimes the neighbors came caroling to us! It always seemed magical when it was foggy on Christmas Eve (it happened pretty frequently) because of the Rudolph Song.... I guess since we were never going to get a White Christmas in the Bay Area, a Foggy Christmas Eve was a close second!

So I'm finally making Taylor a quilt for his new bed. A year ago, I painted his room with a cool BYU theme, but finding bedding to match was next to impossible. I did find a set of sheets that matched on clearance at Kohls last year, but still never found a comforter to go with it. Well, after a couple trips to the Fabric store with no success, I was in Walmart and found this fabric, pretty much by accident! It's not a perfect match, but it works well and it was cheap. So, I took the center piece (before it was all sewn together) and traced a giant "Y" in the center in the BYU style lettering. (Big thanks to Eric for "lending" me the company projector, so I could have the real "Y" to trace.) Yesterday, I quilted all along the outside rows where the blue and gold are seamed together and today (hopefully) I'm going to stitch the giant Y in the center. I hope it turns out good - I've had the idea in my head for months... it's just taken me a while to gather supplies and motivation to finish the job! Of course, quilting it isn't the end... I still have to come up with a plan for finishing the edges and I'm still undecided about how I'm going to do that!

Yesterday, Brayden decided to get in the spirit and unrolled a whole roll of wrapping paper on my family room floor - can you tell by the look on his face that he knows he's getting away with murder???

Things on my to do list today:
*gym... I should be there now, so I'm losing motivation fast on that one....
*wrap gifts for kids before they get "found"
*clean downstairs (my scrapbooking friends are coming in the morning)
*go to boat storage and bail out the cover - it's holding a lake of rainwater and needs to be "saved" before the cover is completely torn from the pressure
*fold 4 loads of laundry that are scattered all over my bedroom floor
*finish T's quilt
These are all things that must be down before 4 p.m. when it's time to start the kid madness - after 4:00 I have to:
*help kids with homework
*dinner, how does BK sound?
*be at Hancock by 5:45 for Ian's Second Grade "performance" (no idea what this even is!)
*jam over to Bogle at 6:40 for Taylor's band concert
*bring kids home and rush off to Drea's House for ornament exchange that starts at 7:30, but I will not even have a hope of getting there before 8:15..... it's going to be one of those days!

Christmas Card Rejects

My Christmas Cards are going out in the mail today - here are some of the reject photos that DIDN'T make the final cut -

My plan for the above was to convert to B&W but it just didn't work as well as I'd hoped... but then I couldn't use the color version because the colors clashed so badly!!!! Trial and Error.... What a great opportunity for me to showcase my BAD photography days... believe me, I can do better!!!

On this batch, we tried to involve the dog, but I think he needed to go potty, because he just wouldn't sit still - that's unusual for him now that he's 8 1/2 years old... now a days he's all about laying around the house and being lazy!
<---- Here's the perfect picture - there's just one problem - I'm missing the runt of the family - I had everyone set up and ready to go and he just wouldn't cooperate, no MATTER WHAT I bribed him with... cookies, candy, popcorn, etc. I can't wait until he's just a bit older and understand the concept of a "bribe".... But isn't this a great picture of the older three kids???? I love it! So, just try to "imagine" the head of my two year old just below Ian's chin... that was the original plan... oh well... I was happy with the final pose and photo I used for the card (not shown here....) I guess for next year I'd better work on my photoshop skills... if I knew how to do it, I could add the little bugger.... :)

I will post the card that got mailed out in about a week for my local friends (who get to see my kids all the time.....) that way it won't get spoiled for all the out of town friends and family!
